First Snow Falling

Late, but winter is coming

The Start of Winter

Finally, some snow and cold temps here in New Hampshire. As we all know winter is starting later and later, making stick season last longer and longer….. I hope you’re all enjoying some time off this week, maybe overeating, maybe not, either way thanks for being on this list and sharing some time with me.

Dusting One Off - Into the Archive

January 24, 2009 Cutler, the best avalanche dog I’ve ever met. I made this the year before I started working on Mount Washington with the Avalanche Center.

Winter on Mount Washington hits a bit differently than down here in the valley, it’s longer, more fierce, and more interesting. I was fortunate to work in Huntington and Tuckerman Ravines for a handful of winters with the USFS. I dragged my camera around a lot of the time, learning how to deal with all the complications that come with photo gear and wild winter conditions. Some of my favorite winter images come from those days, in particular, this set here: Geography of Snow

An Org Worth Checking Out

In keeping with the winter theme, here’s a non-profit that is a valuable resource for anyone heading into the White Mountains this time of year.

Adventure of the week

I could post a photo of my desk, because that’s where I was most of the week, but everyone knows that painful landscape. So instead here’s a little glimpse of a day out photographing Pike fishing. This tends to be the last of the species to chase this time of year at least for me. I’m frequently amazed at the wild details fish have when you take a minute to look closely at them. Infinite dots, patterns and colors so fine they get lost in splashing chaos of catching and releasing. I’m still trying to get a close-up of those gnarly teeth maybe next week.

The tiny dots and the subtle blood vessels really blew my mind when I looked at this image on a large screen.

Nothing is wasted in the sea; every particle of material is used over and over again, first by one creature, then by another. And when in spring the waters are deeply stirred, the warm bottom water brings to the surface a rich supply of minerals, ready for use by new forms of life.
